Examples of how we help clients
- We have helped stakeholders to collaborate on sector-wide human resource strategies. For example, we worked with public, private, and non-profit employers who provide services to persons with developmental disabilities in Alberta to create a long-range human resource strategy for this sector. The Alberta Council for Disability Services sponsored this project – the first of its kind in Canada – in response to a recruitment and retention crisis. This project has contributed to improvements in HR practices and working conditions.
- We have full-service, web-based survey capabilities for designing, conducting, analyzing and reporting customized surveys. (We also conduct paper-based mail surveys.) Through our former subsidiary, Great Place to Work® Institute Canada, we conducted the research for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 “Best Workplaces in Canada” lists, which involved surveying tens of thousands of employees in hundreds of companies, as well as qualitative assessments of these firms’ cultures and human resource practices.
- We design and conduct customized work environment surveys. For example, we surveyed 12,000 members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta, which represents non-nursing professional and technical employees in healthcare. The study results have enabled the union and health employers to identify changes needed in the work environment that will improve the quality of work life and job effectiveness. Changes resulting from the survey were presented at the 2007 Health, Work and Wellness conference.
- We have done extensive employment and labour market policy advising and research. For example, we researched and wrote reports on work time and work-life balance in federally regulated industries for the Federal Labour Standards Review. One report synthesised published research and provided an analysis and interpretation of a variety of data sources from Statistics Canada and a national survey of employees, conducted by The Graham Lowe Group and Ekos Research Associates. A second report analyzed work time, work arrangements, and support for work-life balance using data from the Federal Jurisdiction Workplace Survey.
- We have helped organizations to consolidate, integrate and learn from their existing human resource and workplace wellness policies, practices and data. For example, we conducted a healthy organization audit of a national professional service organization, identifying ways to integrate HR initiatives within a healthy organization framework. We helped a major health care organization take stock of current HR and healthy workplace initiatives and to move forward using a more strategic approach. We created for a national public service organization key indicators of employee engagement drivers and outcomes by re-analyzing its employee survey data.
- We work with executive teams, managers and employee groups to create workplace or “people” visions, guiding principles, and action plans. For example, we helped the executive team of a leading natural resources company to develop a people vision and guiding principles, which were used to redesign management training and development. We helped a national research institute to create a workplace vision and a plan to implement workplace improvements based on extensive employee consultations.
- We design and conduct research used in expert testimonies for labour arbitrations and legal cases. For example, evidence from a consumer survey we designed and conducted for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union was instrumental in successful arbitration rulings related to employer restrictions on employee appearance.
